6 Home Design Trends for 2018

February 8, 2018 | By Schuyler Williamson

Home design trends come and go – and these quickly changing fads can often be too much to keep up with. But if you are planning to sell your home this year, paying close attention to this year’s latest home design trends will poise your home to sell for top dollar.

Here’s a quick look at the top design trends for 2018.

Floral Prints

Expect to see a resurgence of big beautiful floral prints on furniture and drapery. Another favorite pattern is geometric shapes, especially on wallpaper. Botanical references in high-contrast colors and oversize blooms will replace low-energy floral patterns of the past.

Natural Elements

It’s important to design a space that fits with it the architecture it resides in, and, in some way, reflect the geography of its location. Choosing natural elements and using materials that are long lasting will result in a beautiful space with longevity that will stand the test of time.

Brass Accents

We are getting away from the brushed silver hardware and moving more into those golden brass tones that are warm and subtle. It’s a nice substitute for the stainless steel that’s expected and cold these days. Brass accents throughout the home help add a luxurious finish to any room.

Bold Colors

Gray may still be the neutral of choice for many interiors, but color choices are set to be bolder this year – on both walls and furniture pieces. Moody interiors are more popular than ever, too, with violet, navy and emerald green all key colors for 2018.

Using high contrast color palettes balances the mood of your space so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. If you’re having trouble picking out a bold color, try green, because it’s found in nature and is timeless.

Color in the Kitchen

Expect to see more color in kitchens this year. While all-white kitchens have been popular for a while, this look is on its way out. Adding color and texture in the kitchen can help make the space feel more inviting. All-white kitchens are hard to keep clean, and thus, may sell for less money. Zillow data shows homes with blue kitchens sell for $1,800 more than homes with white kitchens. You’ll see more homes with kitchen islands, or cabinets, painted navy blue or using white countertops to contrast with medium or light wood cabinets.

Statement Floors

2018 will reveal the replacement of statement walls with statement floors. From bold colored geometric tiles to herringbone-style hardwoods, expect to see fab floors next year, especially in spaces such as bathrooms. They’re a great way to make a small room pop, without adding clutter.
